Premise

Dragon gods rule the realm, demons lurk in the shadows, and a sorcerer hides a dangerous secret. A war is brewing in Jothesia, and the gods have no idea.

Being selected as human sacrifice to the immortal dragon shifters is supposedly an honor, but rebellious Libby doesn’t see it that way. When the sacrificial ritual goes badly wrong, she finds herself in a reluctant alliance with eldest god Rhetahn. He’s grumpy, cynical, and utterly exasperating …and she can’t get him out of her head.

Rhetahn knows there’s something wrong with this sacrifice, and it’s not just her infuriating stubbornness or the way she makes his jaded heart skip a beat. When terrible misfortune befalls his brothers and renders him powerless, his only choice is to unite with Libby to seek answers.

As they set out on a dangerous quest across the realm, the compelling attraction between them is undeniable, yet doomed. To recover his magic, regain his strength, and prevent the demons from seizing power, Rhetahn needs her blood. He must kill her at the end of their journey, even if it breaks his heart to do so.

But a terrible power lies hidden in Jothesia, one that could destroy everything the gods have built. Libby and Rhetahn’s forbidden relationship may be the realm’s only hope against utter ruin.

Review

Review (No Spoilers)

I read this book a while ago and literally forgot to draft a review, so forgive me if my memory seems to fail me at times. Sacrifice was an interesting book for me to read because it was a blend of fantasy and romance that I felt I hadn’t really experienced before. The book teeters on the edge of paranormal romance, but it doesn’t quite plant its foot firmly on either side of the two genres.

The plot follows a human girl (Libby) who was chosen as a sacrifice to dragon shapeshifters. Have you ever read a dragon shapeshifting book before? Cause I haven’t! When the ritual goes wrong, Libby is forced to ally herself with one of the dragon gods, Rhetahn, to solve the problem, despite knowing that, in the end, she will have to die. As they spend more and more time together, Libby and Rhetahn realize that though they don’t always get along, they also can’t seem to resist each other.

The romance in this book was difficult for me to get a handle on, because it definitely comes across as toxic and abusive at the beginning. Libby is literally being held hostage and initially threatened with death at almost every turn, so it’s tough to know where the lines of consent are in that equation. Because of this, I think this book would meld well with fans of dark romance, as those are books that tend to test the boundaries on standard romantic relationships.

The overall plot of this book follows dragon gods that rule from afar and find themselves disconnected from the world, much to (some of their) dismay. It is the first book in a series, so there is a lot of set up in this novel that will play out in future installations. I’m already prepped for there to be a lot more violence and bloodshed in the future. There were also a few side characters that I would love to explore more. Im hoping the sequels will quench these curiosities.
